KFCB Chairman Njogu Njoroge Halts Film Licensing Notices for YouTube Creators
Decision Comes After Outcry Over 14-Day Ultimatum Issued by Acting CEO Paskal Opiyo to YouTube Creators
The Kenya Films and Classification Board (KFCB) Chairman Njogu Njoroge has ordered the retraction of film licensing notices issued to YouTube content creators.
This decision follows the uproar that ensued after several content creators shared notices from Acting Chief Executive Officer Paskal Opiyo, who had given them a 14-day ultimatum to acquire filming licenses or face legal action.
The ultimatum sparked widespread frustration among creators and Kenyans online. In response, hours after the notices were sent out, KFCB Chairman Njoroge announced the directive’s recall to allow for consultative meetings with content creators.
“Our content creators should be fully supported. We should encourage and assist them in every possible way. We need to focus on training our youth on monetization, and we are committed to that,” Njoroge emphasized.
“I have instructed the management to withdraw the notices and arrange discussions with all stakeholders to protect thousands of jobs in digital media,” he added.
