Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) has revealed the final designs of a state-of-the-art sports complex in its Airport District
The construction of a multi-billion shilling sports arena will solidify Mwale City as a premier destination for talent and entertainment, as well as promote sports medicine and tourism as part of the city’s medical tourism initiative.
MMTC announced that the multi-purpose sports arena will be suitable for hosting a variety of sports, including soccer, rugby, basketball, tennis, hockey, volleyball, American football, and swimming.
In addition to sports, the arena will also host concerts, conferences, virtual reality experiences, and other revenue-generating events to maximize its usage. The complex will also include a talent and innovation school that will provide training and education for young people in sports, preparing them to compete on an international level.
According to an alderman at the Airport district of MMTC, the construction of the multi-purpose arena is set to begin in the middle of this year and will take 18 months to finish so construction is expected to be complete by November 2024.
The Airport District at MMTC is one of the five districts within Mwale City, and is intended to serve as the primary entertainment hub of the city.
Other districts in Mwale City include the Industrial District, which features a solar power plant, the Grid District, which comprises of residential homes, the Golf District, which spans 9km along Golf and Church roads. The Plaza District serves as the main commercial area and includes the Hamptons Hospital, Innovation Park, shopping and dining options, as well as Plaza Residences.
In March last year, Hamptons Hospital began providing round-the-clock services in all departments, following a successful six-month pilot program.
The newly completed maternity wing, with the capacity to deliver 96 newborns per day in its ultra-modern obstetrics department, is among the departments that now operate 24/7. Other departments that are now providing 24-hour service include Oncology, Inpatient and Outpatient, Radiology, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Trauma, Special Surgery, Renal, Diabetic, Ear-Nose-Throat, Infectious Disease, and ICU.
Hamptons Hospital, which opened in 2019 and serves both Kenyans and medical tourists, provides treatment to residents of Kakamega County with NHIF cards without any additional co-payment charges.
MMTC, a community-owned sustainable metropolis valued at US $2 billion (Ksh200 billion), is built around the Hamptons Hospital. The project, which was conceived by Kenyan-American investor Julius Mwale, is located in Butere Sub-County, Kakamega County, Kenya.
